Having a GPS device like the Garmin device that you keep in your car makes it easy to drive in unknown places as well as to walk near you. The device determines your exact position with GPS satellites and compares your location with saved maps in order to find points of interest in your area, be it streets, restaurants or rivers. If you have an accurate map, your device will give brief directions to your destination. However, if your map is out of date, you may be sent the wrong direction on a one-way street, use an inefficient route, or ask for a turn where it isn't associated. Garmin allows you to download free map updates when you purchase a new device to provide accurate directions and accurate performance of your new device.
Connect your Garmin GPS to your computer with the USB cable that came with the device.
Use the web browser to visit the Garmin page for finding a map (see first link).
Choose "Automotive" and press "Download Map Updater". Save this file to your desktop. If the download button doesn't appear, there are no free downloads available on your device.
Double-click the downloaded file to install the Garmin Map Updater on your computer. You may need to update the Microsoft .NET Framework. This application provides the necessary information when needed.
After installing the program, click on "Search for device." Once you recognize the device, read the instructions, and click "Continue."
Click "Continue" if the application "Free Card Update Enabled", "New Maps Life update available!" or "Update Available Folder!" If you see the answer is "Your New Tabs", no updates are required. If you see "Update Purchase Folder", your device can not be updated for free.
When you know you are ready to update your cards, click “Continue”. If your device does not have enough space to update, you will be asked to delete photos and music to create your location.
